The 2022 GSSC Challenge!

In the spirit of our organization to provide opportunities for students to collaborate, share, and learn about STEM, we are hosting the 2022 GSSC Challenge as a project-based competition for students to explore a topic of interest beyond their textbooks and innovate within the context of real-world problems.

Registration would open on this webpage by the 1st of September. You will then have two months to prepare your project as a video, a poster, or as a research article.

Prompt: “STEM research and STEM-oriented thinking are versatile tools for solving problems directly in our lives and in our communities. Design a creative STEM solution to such a problem!”

Judges will then review all submissions and prizes will be awarded at our November conference!

Competition Specifications:

Who can participate?

All students who are currently enrolled in high school (not entering college Fall 2022) are welcome to participate!

How to Participate?

The student will have to fill out a quick form through our registration link. The whole process is free but we will require each student to find a mentor in order to provide assurance that the work is conducted with academic honesty. During registration, students will be asked to create a google document where they would share their project.

What is expected of the submissions?

Projects can be in the form of a research article, a poster, or a video. For clarity of presentation we would recommend that they do not exceed 8 pages for the article and 8 minutes for the video.

Judging criteria:

Your presentation will be judged according to the following criteria:

  1. Depth: Here the judges will assess your understanding of the subject, the accuracy of your writing, and the extent of research into the topic.
  2. Relevance: Your topic should aim to understand, or to propose an innovative solution to a real world problem!
  3. Novelty: Is the information insightful? Does the project contain novel perspectives on the subject?
  4. Presentation: The project should be presented in a clear and concise way, the student should also demonstrate individual engagement in the subject.
What should I write about?

Addressing our prompt, any topic is welcome! Whether it is using a biological conservation strategy, designing a robot that serves specific patients’ needs, or making chemical testing kits, anything that solves a problem in your life or in your community would be a great topic!
